"After writing and teaching "Middle Eastern Dance History" for Glendale College, I knew it was time to put together this 4 part workshop series geared specifically for the Middle Eastern dance artist!" - Tamra-henna

Dance History for Belly Dancers - a four part series of weekend intensives!
Dance History for Belly Dancers bridges the gap between information and artistry, cultural understanding and individual expression.

Dancers will learn the culture and history surrounding the dance styles from the Middle East and North Africa. Through lecture, discussion, movement, video, and journaling we will explore these dances and their meanings within their communities. Each weekend intensive will include an investigation of how we can utilize this information to un-earth our own artistic and aesthetic values, and furthur develop our performance skill and art-making.

Course Structure:
In part one, we begin with a bird's eye view of the terrain we will cover. Later, and in each subsequent section, we swoop down to get a closer look at the individual dances of the various Middle Eastern regions: the Arabian Peninsula, the Mashriq (Eastern Mediterranean), Turkey, Iran, North Africa, and of course Egypt!

Each weekend intensive builds upon the topics and concepts covered in the previous part, culminating in a very in-depth look at Raqs Sharqi. By delving into many different dances, students come away with a very holistic understanding of Middle Eastern dance, culture & artistry!
